Day: 51 4/3/90 Cardiff to Newport

Distance:  15km (9.3 miles)    Total Distance:    miles

My mother kindly dropped Margaret and I on the Wentlooge road.  We walked towards Newton, then over some fields down to the sea defences.  The walk to Newport was simple – no trespassing that we were aware of!  We survived on home-made sandwiches till we got to the pub in Duffryn in Newport later in the day.

Near Peterstone Gout, a steam engine was on the sea wall and looked as if it was being used to drag some inland pools of silt and dump it in the sea.  Further along, a bulldozer was mending the sea defences – a reminder of the past winter storms.  After a pint of Guinness (a steep £1.40 a pint!) we walked past the Inmos works before catching a bus back to Cardiff.  We did however have to wait an hour for it to arrive.  It conveniently dropped us at the bottom of Colchester Avenue.  We played eye-spy at the bus stop while we were waiting – Margaret cheated by choosing the word graffiti!
