Day: 74 28/5/91 Tintagel to Port Issac

Distance:  11.5km (7.1 miles)    Total Distance:   1028 miles

We walked down through the town, down the hill to the castle, after buying two huge pasties – one meat and one vegetable.  The road down to the castle was very quiet compared to the previous days bank holiday’s tourists.  Margaret joined me on today’s walk. It was then a climb up to the church, past the Youth Hostel and back down to Trebawich Sands.  As this was to be the only sign of life on the whole walk we stopped here for a cup of tea and a fresh doughnut.  It was a good day for walking – not too hot.  We passed quite a few walkers going in the opposite direction – most of who we saw in the pub in Tintagel later that night!  There were three large climbs and falls almost one after each other about three quarters of the way through the day, but we took them at an easy and steady pace so they were not too bad.

Towards the end of the day, just before coming down into Porthgarvern the path went very close to the edge with large drops.  The cliffs were full of nesting sea birds.  We decided to stop in Port Issac even though it was still early.

Getting a lift back was not too easy. The first lift from Port Issac up onto the main road was OK – from a hotel manageress with a noisy exhaust (the car that is, not her).  Then we got stuck on the main road for 40 minutes.  Eventually we got into a village by walking and then got a lift a lift of a youth worker and her family in a Volvo estate who took us out of her way into Tintagel and dropped us outside the B&B.  We had tea in a restaurant – an artificial chicken curry! We then went for a drink in one of the pubs – the Cornish Arms.
