Day: 59 28/5/90 Bridgwater to Stolford

Distance:  26km (16.1 miles)    Total Distance:   872 miles

It was my friend Paul’s turn to join me today.  With two cars available, our first task was to drop Paul’s car off at Stolford.  We then went back to Bridgwater, and after a failed attempt to park in a car-park (no charge), we parked my car near some new houses.

We strode out of Bridgwater on another fine day, past some dockland-type development where a colleague of ours lived, and soon into the countryside. The paths on this side of the River Parrot were not as good as on the other side. The grass was high in places and the paths rough.  We saw a fox across one field.  We talked well all day – I had not seen Paul for quite a while. Just before we got to Coombwich we met a trio walking in the opposite direction and very keen to talk about the virtues of the area of Somerset.  We had to make excuses to get away as we wanted to get to the pub for lunch. The village was peaceful and picturesque.  Lunch at the pub was also fine – Paul had a mackerel salad and I had a spaghetti bolognase.

After lunch the walk became even more repetitive and we started to long for the sea.  We found we could walk all the way to the headland along the embankments.  There was a bird / nature reserve at the headland with public hides present.

We stopped for a snack and got back on the right side of the barbed wire fence and headed off.  The first mile was very difficult with a lot of drift-wood washed up and parts overgrown.  Soon however the path got better and a track appeared.  We made good time for the last mile or so.  Paul was in much better form than the last time he joined me walking in Portishead.

We drove back and picked up my car.  That evening, after baths etc, we went for a curry in Burnham.  Meg was in much better form although her blisters from her sunburn were huge!
